Designing institutional logo

Here I have came up with mini institutional logos which can appear next to our group logo 'Black Mamba Productions'.

Explosion Entertainment
Piranha Pictures
Golf Movies
Evil Entertainment
Picture Movement Entertainment

Here is our Black Mamba Productions logo-

Or this logo we are undecided and uncompleted between both logos

Designing these logos took a lot to produce due to name and linking it towards film institution, the use of gold and black work well together so we thought as a group it would look nice and presentable towards are audience, but our second logo which was going through development and processing we felt was smart and appealing and although we thought black and white was simple but we felt is was aesthetically appealing and was smartly constructed.

Here is our 2nd from last final piece which has been tweaked to three men not a camera we felt this change was suitable due to the fact there's three of us in our group.

Research on institutional logos.

Researching into institutional logos for mainstream and independent companies.
*Mainstream*
-Warner Bros
-Universal
-SONY Colombia
-20th century Fox
-Disney
-Paramount

*Independent*
-New Line
-Film4
-Warp-films
-Studio-canal

Here I will be researching into institutional logos by looking at the time frame, the build up the through the use of non-diegetic sound and the font sizes so the audience can read it clearly, here I shall be analyzing two companies from the Mainstream company and Independent company from the Mainstream category Warner Bros and Paramount and from the Independent category Studio-canal and New Line.

Two mainstream companies

Warner Bros
Easy to read, simple music which creates the build up for the logo, bright colors so it is visible and the the font is big size so people can easily read Warner Bros. Pictures.

Paramount

Visible so easy to read Paramount when it appears across the mountain, bright colors to attract  audience, gentle tune plays throughout the process when the stars form the ring.

Two independent companies

New line

New line is very simple and basic, although the use of font helps project the company name well and the music helps keep the animation running without it dulling.

Studio-canal

The music fits in perfectly the uses of color at satisfying, the uses of movement help keep the viewer interested perfectly, the music, color, font all put together creates a satisfying opening for the audience.

The main notice between both is mainly the time used in clips from Mainstream and Individual openings due to the standard and quality between the Film institutions and how long the company name is shown for.
This will help us with our filming because we are able to see the standards set from each company on the mainstream and independent categories being able to see the results and technological side of each company being mainstream film company you have dramatic music playing to capture the viewer whilst having long opening to build up the excitement this is useful for our film as we are able to create an dramatic and exciting opening.

Decision on what production company we should be.

If I was to pick an 'production company' I'd aim to be more mainstream due to attention and build up of an new release especially if it gathers multiple audience attention and becomes world wide, we as a group prefer the big names and upcoming stars like Michael B Jordan, Tom Hardy and Channing Tatum these type of stars would really fulfill the roles in our film but aren't hired a cheap interests if you want big stars you have to pay big money that's is one key role into why we'd be mainstream, other reasons as the quality of the film we believe if you have the money you may as well go all big as you want it to look good and the standards should be set high if you want to hit box office standards which aren't easy to achieve.
As an individual I would of selected an mainstream company we all went for Sony Colombia as we found out some our more preferred films came from Sony and the uses of actors also appealed to us Denzel Washington and Daniel Craig, we also researched in budget and incomes from films which also gave us an eye opener on the fact that if you put loads of money into the a film and it is marketed right you income from releases is higher and profits improve.
Here is a Columbia Pictures drama based film named 'fury'

 Prefontaine
Steve Prefontaine, a Coos Bay, Oregon student, is too small to play most sports but becomes a talented distance runner. He enrolls at the University of Oregon in 1969, and meets fellow Oregon Ducks track and field athletes Pat Tyson and Mac Wilkins. With coaches Bill Bowerman and Bill Dellinger, "Pre" wins three national cross-country championships and four consecutive 5,000-meter runs, breaking the U.S. record in the latter. Prefontaine gains fame as an aggressive runner who likes to be out front from the start, rather than biding his time until a strong finish.

As a group we decided to pick Independent due to financial side and crew ability to make a film, this was one of many additional reasons, we also didn't have the financial ability to locate in ran down area and didn't have the performing ability to produce a high quality film, if we was to link this to an independent company we would pit Studio-canal as they have produced multiple independent films ranging from Action, Drama, Horror, Thriller and Comedy, this would of been are best option as they have produced most films and have used multiple well known actors.

We believe this film is suitable to our film and we would enjoy relating our film too it due to our athlete struggling and making to the Olympics the same as Steve Prefontaine, we'd like too relate our film due to the struggles and disadvantages held upon our actor and through the struggles he finally reaches his goal like Steve Prefontaine did this is why we'd relate our film to this film.

Any EXTRA research on Drama and audience attractions

Here I have found out three main factors on Drama and what it takes to produce a good and high quality drama film.
There are three different trends and categories I’ve found.  First, there are true stories. Often the most dramatic stories are the ones that have actually happened or are based on actual events/people.They have broad appeal and national recognition, perhaps even historical significance. There’s something commercial about them, something that connects instead of detracts. The writer will take an event and find an interesting and commercial hook they can explore to create a new angle on the story and those involved.  Some true stories expose something about people or an event or society as a whole that is unexpected, intriguing or brings something to light that has never been seen in that visual way before. From the above list, Titanic, The Queen, Apollo 13.
The second trend is epics. Having a sweeping feeling means you are swept away by the story to a different place. Titanic, Saving Private Ryan, The English Patient, Braveheart, Elizabeth, Cold Mountain, etc. These are all sweeping epics. To be an epic, a script must have that sweeping feel to it, it almost always takes place in a different time period, it must be big budget, have action, romance, drama, numerous or at least large locations, a good number of characters.
The third and final trend is that great dramatic stories start with great characters. Forrest Gump, American Beauty, A Beautiful Mind, Shawshank Redemption, Mystic River, A Few Good Men, Crash, Dead Man Walking, Milk, The Wrestler, It was the character – and the portrayal of that character through brilliant acting – that brings out the true power of the story and makes it connect to an audience. The story of Slumdog Millionaire was a universal, tried and true, rags to riches love story but without the setting (which was the most important character) and those little kids that the audience just fell for, that story wouldn’t have won anything.

Here is the table which shows what happens within the first 2:00 of the film LINCOLN.

This is useful for my final piece as you are able to recognize the genre easily due to the diegetic sound and are able to tell because there is Lincoln and army soldiers and it more based on Lincolns side of the event so you know you wont be experiencing life of an solider but you'll be looking through the eyes of Lincoln so its going to be more dramatic and you'll watch him encounter multiple issues so if we follow in the way of Lincoln and use certain and specific words in our script you are able to latch to the fact you'll be both athletes and its based around them so you'll have experience multiple situations and issues occurring in both of their lifestyles.

Analyse two film openings related to Drama

I'm analyzing two separate drama based films because the topic of my group film preparation is an Drama based film due to multiple catalysis that have played roles to make the film fall under Drama category.

Genre, Drama
Narrative, A stockbroker who works his way up through a company before developing his own company and earning millions but has trouble with police and drug use
Character, tall, slim, american, clean, business dressed
Atmosphere,  lively and excitement, adrenaline rush based
Themes, Yaut, big houses and business building
Setting, 90's America
Sound, Loud and lively
Titles,  Bold and business based

The film 'Wolf of wall street' is an drama based film about the progression of a young business man building an empire, within the first opening scene you are shown his lifestyle, way of living and work as he address the audience how he got there.
The reason this film falls under drama is because of the use of realistic characters, settings and stories also with help through the uses of intense social interactions and dramatic sounds exaggerated performances,
This is shown through camera angels, sound and mise-en-scene.

Genre, Drama
Narrative, Boy lost out on see, creative thoughts and mysterious out comings
Character, Small young Indian boy, long hair and dirty
Atmosphere, Spectacular and creative whilst being out on sea alone Themes, One main theme whilst is a boy in white boat lost out on sea
Setting, Pacific ocean and in the years of 2000-2015
Sound, Mysterious and creative vibrant and enjoyable music (non-diegetic)
Titles,  Bold and easy too read for both young and older generations

The film 'Life of Pi' is an drama based on the story line linking back to a boy who gets stuck on a boat with multiple mysterious actions occurring, this is a drama because everything is extreme and over done, there is multiple components put together which help 'Life of Pi' become an drama based film which are sound non-diegetic and diegetic sound, the uses of camera angels which capture scenes is an amazing way which help emphasis the situation which is happening.

Research into chosen genre-Drama

The purpose of a dramatic story line is make connections with the audience this portrayed through the use of realistic characters, settings and stories also with help through the uses of intense social interactions and dramatic sounds exaggerated performances.
To make a successful dramatic story line the uses of an normal characters living day to day life but mainly living style is low and finical unstable these type of living is easy to relate with and reaches out to the audience, this style helps see the progressions of the family evolve into a better lifestyle.
This knowledge and information is useful for our production as it helps us to be able to reach out to our audience and help our film to entertain our audience as your able to see the progression of the family and the key actor achieve a better lifestyle this also shows our audience belief and motivation which links perfectly with our film we are about to produce.
The main protagonist tend to have a happy ending because the audience is emotionally attach and express feelings when watching the film, when watching an drama film you are attach to one main character who tends to have the most air time you mainly follow them through their lives for multiple years and express their happy and not so happy moments this is used to help keep the audience intact to the film and doesn't bore them too early on.

Forest Gump-

The Godfather-

America Sniper-

Here are 3 well known Drama based films, when researching into each film they are well common which is they're all focus around one character which has the most camera time and you are able to following them in their life and you are connected to the character and hope for the best for them and are able to follow them through their experiences.
Drama films attract audiences through the connection of emotional impact and help carry viewers on a journey through an emotional roller coaster with one specific actor, this attracts audiences through realism and realistic connections people can relate too.

Re-make of group chosen film superbad

I have decided to re-make the film opening to super bad,  I and the group have chose this film because it is an unusual film opening and consists of using a green screen. The fact that it will consist of us using a green screen was the main reason we chose to re-make this film, this is because neither of us have used a green screen before and looked forward to using one and learning how to edit with one. The fact that we have used a green screen to re-create this film opening has given us the skills to possibly use a green screen in the future, we have learnt multiple technical advances and will benefit us when making our own film.

Saturday 16 January 2016

The difference between independent and mainstream film openings

Between both Independent and Mainstream film openings the two different standards take different approaches when producing their film openings, The key character is the 'Institutional Logo',  My companies I shall be comparing our Film4 and Universal, here I am showing you the different 'Institutional logo'.

Film4-

Universal-

Here you can see the standards set by a small independent company who have a budget of 7.5million but in 2013 their budget 15million which has double by 50%, compared to Universal who have a budget worth multiple millions (figure unknown) but here is a list of films Universal have released.
Here you can see the profits Universal have compared to the budget of Film4.
Universal's film Jurassic World earned a staggering 651,926,506million which is 90%more than Film4s budget alone, this already shows the viewer that the quality will be much of a higher standard from Universal compared to Film4.
From comparing both opening sequences it is evidently seen that the mainstream opening is more technical knowing it is more technical gives the audience the satisfaction that the film they are going to watch is at the high standard and will be a film with quality actors and actresses compared to film4 which is a different scenario not knowing the quality of the film and the ability of staff they hire.

Audiences attracted to genres

Stereo-typically it has always been known for men to be interested by action packed films filled with guns, violence and robbery whilst the woman where always into there love romance films where there is always a happy ever after between two unknown people meeting in a cafe.

-Action- Movies tend to attract male audiences as it is more stereotypical for men to be drawn towards violence and crime due to the adrenaline rush men feel so they are more drawn towards this type of genre.

-Class/Race- Movies like this which have diverse cast (some white, black or Asian) we assume this would appeal to more audiences as this brings in more races into the audiences, this is normally middle class film genre so they are regular audiences.

-Age 15-40- This is most likely adrenaline based and rammed packed action leaving the audiences on the edge of their seats this is normally heart pumping and audience hasn't yet reached their adulthood as they are still able to watch fast paced films.

Interests comedy, action, gunfights, escapism and adrenaline burst people who can watch these types of film don't just go because they can there has to be something that appeals to them or interests if its there love for comedy or action even adrenaline through the action scenes.

When looking what our questionnaire provided once of our questions stood out the most which I believe plays and huge figure when promoting a film "7-Are you attracted to film due to its trailer? Yes or No " the trailer plays a huge role within promoting films so surely when producing a film the audience must be attracted due to results we had which was "Yes-29 No-1".

Thursday 14 January 2016

How film openings attract audiences.

Film openings attract audiences through the uses of story line behind the film the other content of what the film may consist of e.g. serial killer on the loose, attacking young innocent kids in a house party? or e.g. Mexican drug lord on the run from FBI, where does he hide his money and drugs to escape life in prison.
Props used within the film are useful as it can help latch in certain audiences, younger audiences can be drawn in by the props used e.g. Miami beach party which contains drugs, alcohol and both sexes can help bring in younger audiences, or certain props may help attract one type of audiences such as cars, money and criminals v cops
Certain locations are used to help grab certain viewers such as Las Vegas can be aimed towards more of a mature age as they are able to experience this type of style due to age restrictions in America, this age range can fluster between ages of 21-55 as they are able to visit this location.
Audience feed back is also useful when producing a film knowing that 80% of male audiences like films which have involvement of cars, crime and money you are more likely to make a film that suits the 80% rather than 20% as you know you will sell more tickets gathering more of a budget.

The film '21 Jump Street' is a suitable film for both audiences male and female-This is seen due to the first scene of the film which is set in a high school which is aimed towards younger audience and the scene shows a mixture between boys and girls.

The film 'Fast and Furious' sequences are aimed towards more male-This is evidently seen due to the uses of props which are cars and crime, this type of style is more aimed towards male audiences as these props are stereo-typically aimed for more men and boys.

The uses of 'Audience Theory' is going to be applied in our piece so we plan to the 'The Effect Model' is applied into our piece due to the Drama target audience as is it aimed towards younger target audience as it is young actors and based on two young lads inspiring to be athletes so this is an eye catcher to young lads so this can help trigger hope and inspire to young boys to better themselves.

Using the theory 'The Effect Model' will help capture our young audience and making sure they enjoy it they could be swayed to want to watch an 2nd film if it was to be released and this helps us create our film with the uses of influences towards young adults showing them success is possible due to hard work but also making sure that the film is enjoyable to watch and enlightens them.

Jelly Baby task

Here is my jelly baby activity with a action based story line about a man living in North Alaska in America and goes out to kill but notices someone in his red alert area so he kills him before two undercover cops arrive at his house noticing he isn't home and go out and a tilt camera from the dead body you are able to see his face and the camera tilts up to the title and you are left seeing these two officers looking into the distance following his tracks into unknown area and white writing with a black title occurring with 10 months earlier.

This will help me with my final piece has it can help us keep in line and following the guidelines so we don't go off the rail, following this type media technique will help me and my group stay on task and we can remove each post it note as we go through each section which means we can see the progression and move forward and make a final piece.

Making the jelly baby activity was very useful as I felt I could relate this perfectly to my final piece and this way of applying this to my final piece was very useful and really stuck in my memory was one part of the film I didn't forget to add and was top in our list of priorities.

Generic Conventions

Generic Conventions is what you would expect to see in a certain genre, for example: in a fantasy genred film you would expect to see maybe unicorns, demons, hero's/villains, strange settings, basically things that are fictional and unreal in our world.

Horror genre -
Some things you would expect to see in a horror genre:
  • blood
  • villain
  • damsel in distress
  • heroic male or female
  • weapons
  • dark colors
  • scary settings
  • undead people/monsters
  • bad weather

Science fiction -
In a science fiction film you would expect to see:
  • aliens
  • spaceships
  • rockets
  • vibrant colors
  • high advanced technology
  • abstract outfits
  • silver and metal objects
  • futuristic sound's
  • wide range of different races and species
  • lasers
  • space setting

Here I have decided to stick with the suggestions such as Horror and Science-Fictions as you are able to relate back to the expectations.

Scream is a good example for Horror- Here it is evidently seen to follow the expectations as it is dark and a woman panicking, the use of dark lighting is also effective and is helps build up the tension, the way the house is also lightened up in the middle of dark area shows it is the target.

Star Wars is a good example for Science-Fiction- In this clip science-fiction is shown superbly through the use of lasers, non-diegetic sound of lasers and flying battleships in space, multiple different types of species such as alien life formality, abstract outfits and is based in space.

This evidence and research is useful to my film making as we try  to make sure the key components seen in Drama stay in our piece and link well to the expected standard of 'Generic Conventions', we will have to research as a group as of Drama key Conventions so we can tie down some of the expected views into our final piece so the users are able to figure out what the Genre the film is when following the Generic Conventions of Drama they are to general knowledge of the film are able to following the film without being left confused.

How Certification have impacts on film openings

Film certification has impacts on film openings due to the rules and regulations that take place, this is seen in film openings has you are able to tell what can happen through out the film or what is expected to be seen, this relates to the certification because if it rated an 18+ you will most likely see either guns and drugs at the beginning to help kick start the film and is able to give the viewer a taste of what is yet to come, if the film contains strong language and violence you are able to tell within the first 5-10 minutes.

This clip here from 'Green Street' is an 18 rated film and contains violence and foul language, this is evidently seen from the clip above this is a suit example of a film which shows the certification within the first 2 opening minutes.

Films like Disney tend to be U rated as they follow there rules and make it suitable for children as none of there newist films contain any violence, drugs , foul language, abuse, sexual content or any illegal substances this is always seen due to the style of the film which is animation and by the font of the titles.

Toy story is a well know Disney film rated U standard you can tell this by the opening 4 minutes of the film as there is no indication of violence, drugs , foul language, abuse, sexual content or any illegal substances, this is shown as it is an animated film and is a boy playing with his toys which also shows the viewer there is no indication of any illegal or viewing that aren't suitable for kids under the age 12, which is the lowest certification before parents must attend or be on there own.

The Woman in Black, a ghost story, was awarded a 12A certificate by the board, prompting 134 complaints, the largest number in 2012. The high figure of complaints resulted into the film becoming an 15 overall.

When producing our film we will have to consider what context of language and attitude of our actors to show the audience what differences our characters have and the personalities each character produces because knowing what our characters are like your able to follow and understanding their living and abilities, the environments used will have to match each actor so your able to see the comparisons between both, making sure we stay within the 15 certificate range.

The classification Categories

The classification Categories-Jack Delaney-16315-1149

Why do we have film classification- To simply protect certain ages for watching more grown up and mature films which involve substances like drug use, violence, sexual content or foul language, e.g. they prevent 13 year old's from walking into the cinema going to watch an '15','18' or '18R' films to simply prevent them from watching films that could potentially effect their lives, there are three main highlight rules which go as the following 'Legal Obligations,' 'Protective' and 'Societal'.

-Legal Obligations-To prevent materials breaking the law.

These guidelines will be applied to the same standard regardless or sexual orientation of the activity portrayed.

These rules will help make our film be more suitable for a target audience which is the age of 15 upwards as it has actors there age range and is suitable and are able to relate to the film, also the rules aren't that strict and are able to match up with our plans and development of making are film, which involves violent language, scenes of violence and drug substance but is very low and low coded, so due to the rules we are vary aware of the rules and conditions and we can follow these are a guidelines.
